About Independent Advocacy (IAPK)

Mission Statement

To enable those people in Perth and Kinross experiencing mental health problems, learning and physical disabilities, frailty or age related problems and Carers to have their voices heard by providing Independent Advocacy so that they are involved in decisions which affect their lives.

We work together with volunteers to create a stronger community where people are valued.

History of Independent Advocacy Perth & Kinross

Advocacy has been in Perth & Kinross since 1995, formally as part of a small managed project under the umbrella of another voluntary organisation, employing one Co-ordinator supporting around 16 active volunteers. The organisation became fully independent as a Company Limited by Guarantee in April 2003 gaining charitable status in January 2004.

Since becoming independent, the organisation has grown considerably over the years, mainly as a result of the recommendations made by the Scottish Executive and legislation, such as the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003. We have nine members of staff, both full and part time. These include six professional independent advocates, one Volunteer Co-ordinator, one Administrator and a Manager. Currently we have approximately 50 advocacy volunteers who support individuals and help facilitate at group advocacy meetings. We hold training sessions for new volunteers two to three times a year.

The Board meets bi monthly and members include advocacy volunteers, people with business, financial and management skills.
